ouch
Geoff, that’s really hard for you….saying you were the only one songwriter of the band, i think that this is proving you’re are hearing now in the really far frontier…

I don’t know, really. Admittedly, I had lost interest in Queensryche’s more recent music, right up ’til the “breakup”. To me, nobody wins when a band is becoming stagnant and if breaking up into a couple of bands calling themselves “Queensryche” make the music become more interesting… so be it. However, Geoff Tate’s version puts out “Frequency Unknown” with the obvious “F.U.” and a fist on the cover… but only a few new songs amid a bunch of “greatest hits” tracks… and I was unimpressed. Now I listen to this, and do appreciate the heaviness of the music… but I doubt I’ll buy it, just as I didn’t buy into “Ripper” Owens doing his Halford impression in Judas Priest. This guy sounds, not similar, but exactly like Geoff Tate… and not the impressive hard-rocking Tate from the first couple of albums… but the one I’d gotten bored with in the end. It’s all Geoff Tate cliches, and if I wasn’t aware of the split up, then I’d think this was Geoff singing. Too bad for this band, ’cause I’d still rather listen to the original if they’re going to be a karaoke version of themselves. His few songs seem more raw and imaginative, and despite the far better production of their album… the cliche sound-alike vocals are off-putting. Just my opinion, but I’m the guy who still thinks Tony Martin was under-rated with Black Sabbath, but other than that… the original guy is always better. Look at AC/DC, Fates Warning, Queen, Helloween, and just about any other rock band that has split from their singer… and you will be hard pressed to find one that is improved by the change. The signature sound is either lost, or becomes a weak impersonation in most cases. :(

Snare drum does NOT fit the music. It’s too loud in the mix as well. Ruins the over all feel of the songs. Guitars need to be way louder.

Geoff won the battle of the bands. This new singer can’t even hit the high notes. Queensryche is Geoff Tate & Geoff Tate is Queensryche. Queensrÿche – Frequency Unknown by the REAL Queensrÿche with Geoff Tate is the better disc and it proves that he is better then the poser Queensrÿche guys that were used to hanging around while trying to absorb Tate’s talent. This new singer is ok but he has a lot of work to do to even get to a portion of the level that Tate is at in his career/talent level.

It’s amazing how much Todd La Torre sounds just like Tate. He’s a perfect replacement should the rest of the band be awarded the rights to the name and continue on. This is a great album. Much better than, “Frequency Unknown.”

after multiple listrenings of both albums, i should say that it’s a terrible mess to see them separated, geoff got the emotion as he lost the voice, but they got a musical coherence he has not; if they composed , i mean really composed together, queensryche should not be in such a situation

Who cares how the production is on this album! This is the best Queensryche album since Promised Land!

Because it’s the best QR album since PL (no big feat), it’s a shame the production let my ears bleed after 2 song. I can live with a lot of flaws, but this is a major one. Nice try…

heavymetal1980s you are full of shit. het your head out of your ass bud
THE NEW CD IS AWESOME. UNLIKE THAT HORRIBLE F.U.
And i bought the CD and it sounds fine. Maybe if you kids would quit listenting to mp3s as main source when all they should be is a sample.. you would be better off. but stay cheap and enjoy lousy sound. your choice.

I’ve not been a fan since Empire, though I’ve still bought each and every album regardless. My favorite is The Warning and I prefer Wiltons style to Degarmo’s, though I will admit, Degarmo was the writer in this band after all is said and done. without Chris there is something that will always be missing.
Now, having to compare these 2 new releases, Queensryche-Queensryche at least sounds like Queensryche while Geoff Tarte’s version is more of a solo project without Queensryche to back him (similar to the last 4 or 5 albums. There is nothing really substantial in FU while there is some good moments in the S/T. Yes Todds vocals sound like Tate, but why bring in a vocalist who sounds way different and could not produce live the older material?, that would have been disastrous.
In the end it’s sad that things had to get to this. Wish Tate would not have caught the Yoko Ono virus and broke up the band. You can not bully people and refuse to listen to ideas. I hope down the road that these guys can reconcile their differences and work together again (original line up w. Degarmo) and create another work of art. Until that time, neither version will prosper – it will be one side verses the other … but on the bright side, this caused some real emotion to come forth in the writing. Something that has been missing for such a long, long time.

jase, i don’t know about your stereo setup or how developed your ears are, but this album is one of the worst victims of high compression / loudness war / mastering i’ve ever heard.
Yes, I downloaded the mp3 files as a sample and couldn’t believe what i was hearing, then downloaded the flac, same sound. Then i checked the CD from a friend. Better, but still unlistenable for me and my ears.
Check an active Queensryche forum. A lot of real customers have issues with the sound.
( Lars Ulrich on the mastering of Death Magnetic: “It sounded good in the car.” )
Even if this album had a good sound, i wouldn’t buy it, because the songs are just okay.
So, in the end, for me, it’s 2 disappointing QR releases in one year, but the drama is still highly entertaining.
Another example of an earbleeding sound is Van Halen’s Different Kind Of Truth. I own the CD and really like most of the songs, but can’t listen to it longer than a few minutes before the fatigue sets in.
